OUR HISTORY

We are very proud to inform you that STP’s roots can be traced way back to 1987, and through a progressive journey, the then Sky Insurance Brokers, merged with Market Financial Services in 1994 and became Sky Market. We then opened our doors as SKY TIV in 2006 by merging two well-known brokerages, namely Sky Market Financial Services and TIV Insurance.

A year later, we proudly became a Hollard Select Broker, where Hollard bought a 30% equity share in SKY TIV.

In 2010, following very successful and productive years, we approached Hollard to assist us in purchasing the local brokerage Promark Insurance Brokers, and today are still going strong under the name STP Insurance Brokers.

In 2016, we bought Riverstone Insurance Brokers and at the same time moved to our new offices that year. December 2017 saw us buying out Hollard of their interest in STP, due to a change in regulations. In July 2018, Fulcrum Capital Partners acquired a stake holding in STP. Due to changing regulations in our sector, Fulcrum needed to exit their investment. In April 2019 Medu Capital acquired the Fulcrum shareholding, providing us with excellent and valuable corporate support and expertise.

In 2021 we concluded the acquisition of a stake in leading Johannesburg based brokerage called Kapara Insurance Brokers. This increased the STP footprint nationally. The transaction also saw STP MD, Stephen Hanssen, assuming the position of MD in Kapara. At the same time, STP decided to align themselves with the Jacana Group – an initiative lead by Medu Capital and their financial services subsidiaries. Part of this alignment was to make use of Jacana Administration Services. Jacana Admin is an independent administration hub providing best of breed insurance products for distribution through the brokerages. It also provides other operational resources and support services, including IT, Financial Management, Legal and Compliance and HR/Payroll. It is effectively our execution engine vital to the growth of our brokerage network where the differentiator will be tech driven. On the 1 January 2023 STP acquired a substantial stake in a leading Cape Town brokerage, Intasure Insurance Brokers. This transaction makes STP Group one of the largest independent broking firm in the Western Cape with almost 120 employees in the region.

Our alignment does not only extend to their corporate strategic knowhow, but also that their ethos mirrors our own. Our Associations

Because we believe in keeping up to date with all the insurance changes and know that, at times, we too will need assistance, STP is a proud member of the FIA (Financial Intermediaries Association of Southern Africa). FIA is there for us, to give our queries, concerns and suggestions a voice, and supports us to across platforms such as development, education, promotion and protecting our rights.

Besides our close partnership agreements, STP also acts as an agent for various leading South African insurance companies, always looking to bring our clients the best advice through innovative products.

Training & Staff Development Business

The world of Insurance is constantly evolving as the needs of our clients change. It is for this reason we encourage our staff to attend industry related seminars whether it be virtual or physical, in order to stay up to date with the latest movements in the insurance industry. By doing this, we are confident that not only will we be able to give you the best advice suited to your needs, but this will also develop our staff’s knowledge base and skills.

HOW WE GIVE BACK

STP believes in giving back where possible and so, over the years, we have partnered with a few organisations.

STP works hard to build long-term partnerships with community-based organisations such as schools, clubs and sports teams. Through these partnerships, and the referred business they generate, we are able to assist the organisations financially and contribute towards social upliftment in the communities they serve.

Our corporate social responsibility initiatives include:

  • Annual donations to various NGOs for specific projects that assist AIDS hospices and abused women and children.
  • Monthly contributions to various charitable organisations including the National Sea Rescue Institute and the Red Cross

Jacana Foundation

STP and its partner brokerages contribute to The Jacana Foundation. This is a development foundation which comprises of numerous projects located in different regions of South Africa and primarily aims at giving back to society. Current Active Projects:

Rally to Read:
Based in KZN and the Western Cape, Rally to Read is a literacy development programme focused on rural primary schools, which are provided annually with classroom libraries of books and whose educators are provided with training and mentorship for a consecutive 3-year period. Apart from funding, Jacana annually assists with the delivery of the books to the designated rural schools.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI)
This NPO provides an essential rescue service to water users who find themselves in difficulty on South African coastal and inland waters. With 42 bases manned entirely by a volunteer crew, the NSRI is the only nation-wide service of its kind, operating 24/7 and 365 days the year. The Jacana Foundation supports the NSRI by providing funding to assist the institute to deliver on their mandate.

The Children’s Hospital Trust
The commitment to good health and a concern for the well-being of youth is core to the Jacana Foundation. The Children’s Hospital Trust plays a unique and critical role to advance this in South Africa. The Children’s Hospital Trust raises funds to advance child healthcare through the Red Cross Hospital Trust – a tertiary hospital, exclusively for children. The trust raises funds for the upgrade and expansion of the hospital’s buildings, the purchase of medical equipment and new medical treatment projects. It also funds the training of medical professionals. The Jacana Foundation supports this by providing funding to the Trust.

Siyaphambili Surf Ski Club
This club, based in the KZN coastal areas, provides opportunities for men and women, with a focus on youth from previously disadvantaged communities (including people with disabilities), to participate and compete in surf ski paddling and, in the process, empowering participants with life skills. The Jacana Foundation provides funding to the trust and also ensures that volunteers offer their time and expertise to assist the trust deliver on its mission.
We strongly believe in giving back to our community in the best way we can. Each year, members of our staff gather clothing, food and toys for babies who have been abandoned at a young age. The company also donates funds to help keep these safe havens for children operational so that they can continue giving young abandoned babies of our community a chance at life.

We also partnered up with an NPO that uplifts young girls through sport and academic support. The organization provides skilled coaching and opportunities for the girls to participate in tournaments across the Western Cape. These girls come from underprivileged communities and we strongly believe that through Sport and Education, they have an opportunity to channel their focus to positive activities and diverging them away from the negative activities that are prevalent in these communities which could hinder their growth.

At the end of the year, the company also gathers gifts for an initiative called Santa’s Shoe Box. Volunteering staff members buy Christmas gifts for the less fortunate in efforts to help make their Christmas more special and memorable.

We are constantly doing our best to try and help our community in order to bring about positive changes so that more people have the opportunity to thrive and secure a better future.

We are proud to have launched our first graduate programme in February 2019 where we had an intake of 3 young graduate students.

Our graduate programme aims to provide young graduates with a strong foundation to kick start their careers. It is an 18-month programme that will accelerate their development and ability for future roles in a nurturing environment with lots of experienced brokers and underwriters as a support structure and mentor.

Upon successfully completing the graduate programme, our 3 graduates were offered permanent positions and accepted.
